HAND-BLOWN BALLS. You'll find lots of beautiful, decorative balls at the General Store. These are made by American craftspeople and make the most delightful of year-round decorations.

ESPECIALLY FOR KIDS

     There's nothing like a school vacation to bring young people into the General Store. They mostly come with parents or other elders (who drive) and they all have a great time wandering around looking at stuff. We want our store be a fun place to shop for people of all ages, and almost everyone thinks that it is. And it's not just because of the 30 flavors of rich, fresh ice cream or the loads of candies, but there's lots of other merchandise that's both fun and educational.

     We offer a pretty fair collection of books for kids. Challenging mazes, fascinating games, tattoos, cut-outs - all kinds of books for the very young and for the fussy early teens, too. Remember finger puppets? Yep. At the General Store. And Pick-Up-Stix? Here too. Marbles? (Some would say "allies".) Lots of marbles, though we admit they're mostly bought by adults for their collections. Anyway, we'd need a special web site to show you all our kids merchandise, so we'll post a picture or three here and invite you in to see the rest. Plan to stay a while.

LITTLE TINS OF SEEDS

We find some of the neatest things at local gift shows. A small business in Maine collects seeds and puts them up in pretty, little tins. We think these would make a wonderful gift for someone who enjoys growing flowers. A youngster might want to give one to his or her mother for Mother's day. They cost $1.99.

The tins are about the size of a pill box. Once the seeds are planted, the box would make a cool place to hide your diamonds and rubies.

SHOPPING SHOULD BE FUN.

      We're dedicated to the idea that everyone deserves an enjoyable place to shop. Your enjoyment of the Williamsburg General Store is provided by our wonderful employees. They're the people who make sure our store is all you want it to be. They smile and say hello when you come in, then leave you alone so you can poke around to your heart's content. And there's so much poking to do! Well, okay - when one of us sees that your hands are getting full of things you want, she'll come to your rescue with one of our old fashioned wicker shopping baskets.

     To be honest, we haven't actually counted every last item of merchandise in our store - that would take a month of Sundays! Our pretty good estimate, however, is that you'll find far more than 100,000 neat-o things. We welcome anyone to try and count all the wonderful things we have. No one's taken us up on this so far, and we doubt anyone ever will.

HOW ABOUT A HAND MADE APRON?                     OR HAND CARVED FIGURES.

 

     Toward the middle of March we'll finish installing new shelving and a new wide-board floor in the holiday room behind the bakery counter. It's a big project, but when we're done you'll find even more wonderful merchandise. We've retained an excellent local carpenter/craftsman to lay the floor and design and build the new shelves.

     We're writing this on March 8. The project is almost done and our customers are eagerly making their way into the renewed area. We have a lot of nice things there already, and more are soon coming. Right now you'll find warm, snuggly sweatshirts, proudly sporting WILLIAMSBURG on them. If you know New England weather, you know there's plenty of chilly air ahead. A new sweatshirt can help make our untrustworthy springtime a bit easier to take.

Of course, summer won't be far behind. That's why we have lots and lots of handsome tee shirts for you to consider for yourself or as a gift that someone will truly appreciate.

HIKING STICKS If you've got to buy a gift for a guy, please consider a hand-crafted hiking stick. (You may call it a walking stick if you prefer.) We've found a small Texas company that goes out and finds unusual and beautiful woods. They peel the bark and do all sorts of wonderful things with the wood underneath. They end up with a great variety of attractive and practical sticks. "Sticks" doesn't do them justice. They're more like works of art, but with down-to-earth prices.

  Our sales employee Emily took these two pictures to give you an idea of what our walking sticks look like. Proprietor Emeritus David poses with one, and our new collection will give you an idea of the variety. They have a leather loop to put around the wrist, so's not to drop it.

        After all, the Williamsburg General Store is mostly a gift shop. Yes, we bake wonderful home made breads, pies, pastries, and cookies every day of the week. Yes, we scoop up 30 flavors of the freshest, richest ice cream you've ever tasted. Yes, we serve gourmet coffees, fancy teas, hot cocoa, and chai. And candies - lots and lots of candies. But these are things you probably want for yourself (and we don't blame you one bit), not as gifts for someone else. A gift for yourself? Who deserves it more?

          Okay, now we're stuck! With more than a hundred thousand gifts (or maybe it's more than two hundred thousand) we can't begin to list them or show pictures of them all. But we can give you a few gift ideas. So here we go.
