| WILLIAMSBURG - A WONDERFUL TOWN Few towns, if any, have had such an adventurous life. The Mill River (one of several of that name) runs through it. In its early days a dam here and a dam there allowed entrepreneurs to build and run small factories, making everything from axes to buttons to silk. Then on one tragic morning in May, 1874, the biggest dam of all burst. The early morning flood washed away factories, homes, and, sadly, killed nearly 200 men, women, and children. This 20-minute disaster forever changed the nature of our town. Among the businesses washed away was a general store, located along the river in the section of town called Skinnerville. It's owner hadn't come to work that morning, thus his life was spared. But he lost everything else. An intrepid fellow, he gathered his wherewithal and rebuilt his business in what is the center of today's Williamsburg. This classic and authentic general store is here to this day, with a rather different line of merchandise. There have been many owners over the years. An addition in the early 1900's provided the town with a post office. Today it's our ice cream parlor. Several smaller additions followed, and a large one in 1979, under our ownership, which has become one of New England's foremost in-store retail bakeries. The Majercik family has owned this historic store since 1977. We're proud to part of a small town that thinks big and welcomes visitors from far and wide. Four restaurants, a brewery, a grocery, banks, libraries, schools, churches, service stations, free parking - you name it. Come spring and all summer long visitors enjoy our Walk of Ten Thousand Flowers. The flowers are right here in the center of the village, waiting for you to stroll and enjoy. But please come in the winter, too. The General Store and two excellent, walking-distance restaurants are open every day. We're all pretty informal, so don't fuss with dressing up. And please do bring your children - everyone is welcome in Williamsburg.
